Effective Team Management - The Secret of Team Success

There are a lot of things which cannot be done without taking help from others, let's take an example of our hand. Can we write with a pen using a single finger we need another finger to hold it? Likewise to do any other work all our five fingers are effectively managed to move in a coordinated manner to accomplish any task. Similarly, the process of managing a group of individuals in order to accomplish a common goal is known as team management. Now let's move on to the necessity of effective team management. Why do you think team management is necessary?

It is because effective team management offers the following benefits:

1. Better outcomes

2.  Increased efficiency

3. Better ideas

4. Mutual support

5. Increased competency

6. Sense of accomplishment

Managing a team effectively leads to better coordination among the team members. People can unlock their inner potential and reinforce their expertise when tackling the challenges associated with the team's work, and reduce the risk of individual contributions. This helps the whole team of employees, improve their performance and so, deliver better outcomes, both in terms of quality and quantity. When the employees in the team are managed to work collectively and are encouraged, inspired, and motivated, it leads to increased efficiency. Each member of a team may have different ideas, thoughts, vision, skills etc. When these members are managed to apply their different skills to tackle the same problem they come up with more efficient and quick solutions. This promotes better ideas.

Mutual support - managing the people to work together gives the team members the opportunity to understand their co-workers better for their strengths and weaknesses and encourages supporting each other to achieve their common goals.

Increased competency- effective team management increases healthy competition among the team members, which provides the employees and a team, to grow and improve their skills further. This, in turn, increases their competency.

Sense of accomplishment- accomplishing the goal would account for the success of each individual in the team. This gives them a greater sense of accomplishment.

Some tips for effective team management are:

1. Avoid favouritism

As a team manager, you should not show any favouritism. You may like or dislike some members of your team personally, but personal interest must be kept out of professional work.

Treat everyone as equal. Good work must be appreciated, praised, and credited, as this boosts up the team members morale. This encourages them to contribute more to the team. Acknowledge the team members individually for a good job or task done by them give your team members an opportunity to take their own decisions and come out with good results. Support and guide them to learn from difficulties, arising due to the decisions they have taken. Talking to every member of your team is very important as it enables you to understand your team's strengths and weakness. Effective communication within your team helps achieve the tasks assigned more easily and quickly. Set processes and find ways to improve them for smooth functioning of the team. Shouting and scolding your team members in front of everyone makes them feel insulted and may impact your team's performance negatively. A better option is to talk privately and be sure that your team is moving in the right direction. The direction is determined by the goals of your organization. Try to link the individual goals of your team members to the organization goals. This increases the potential of your team.

Motivating your team on a regular basis increases the commitment among your team members. Motivation also serves to inspire your team to work more effectively. Make periodic assessments to keep a record of the team's progress. Also, make assessments on the team members’ strengths and weaknesses. Discipline is very important and that you have to inculcate in your team rules and policies. Your team members may come from different backgrounds of thoughts, ideas, etcetera, are common and that ultimately leads to conflicts. Without being biased, figure out the best means to solve it. Get every one of your team involved in the decision-making process, allow each one to express their opinion and then make a decision to gain their acceptance. This enhances team spirit.

Let us see how nature makes us learn to manage a team. Success depends on teamwork. Successful teamwork depends on how they are managed and share their work among themselves. Let us see few examples from nature, the roles of each honeybee are clearly defined. Division of work and communication are the perfect examples we can learn from that show how well they are organized. The example of it tells us how it cooperates with each other.

The above picture says it all. Check out these geese. They always fly in V formation. As a result of their flight, efficiency increases by 71% compared to just one bird flying. When the leader leading from the front gets tired he goes to the back of the V formation and then another goose takes charge. This teaches us about leadership. Lastly, we can conclude that effective team management leads to a successful team. Successful teams lead to a successful organization.
